Description

A custom mosaic is developed for a client, place or purpose. It may be a portable artwork, garden feature or architectural surface. The arrangement, scale and direction of individual units are part of the artistic design, alongside their colour and material.

History

Mosaics have a long history of work made for particular spaces. Roman floors, for example, combined patterned borders and chosen imagery within the dimensions of individual rooms.

Commissioning

The subject, palette, size and viewing distance should be discussed with the maker. The commission should define whether the work is made in place or prepared for later installation, and include the backing, border and fitting responsibilities.
