Description

Sculpture is the creation of three-dimensional artistic form. Stone sculpture can be freestanding or in relief, figurative or abstract, carved from a block or assembled with other materials. Mass, space, scale, surface and viewpoint shape the work and its relationship to the viewer.

History

Stone sculpture extends from ancient objects and monuments to contemporary art. Techniques have developed through both direct work in the material and workshop methods that transfer drawings or models into stone.

Commissioning

The initial discussion should cover the artist’s approach, intended place, scale and purpose of the work. Proposals or models, review stages, stone selection and finish should be agreed. Transport, foundations and installation should be included where required.
