Description

Stone carving removes material to create a form, surface, image or inscription. Hand tools, powered tools and abrasive processes are used according to the stone and design. A carver may work directly in the block or from drawings, templates and models. Surfaces can retain tool marks or receive a smoother finish.

History

Points, chisels, drills and abrasives have a long history in stoneworking. Many hand-tool principles remain recognisable from antiquity, while later workshop and mechanical methods expanded the ways designs could be transferred and finished.

Commissioning

The practitioner should have experience suited to the form and material. A portrait, architectural ornament and vessel can require different skills. The brief should establish the finish and the stages at which drawings, models or developing work will be reviewed.
