Description
Custom sculpture is developed for a particular person, place, idea or purpose. Proposals can emerge through discussion, drawings, models or direct consideration of the stone. The artist’s interpretation forms part of the commission rather than simply reproducing a finished image supplied by the client.
History
Commissioned work has supported sculpture in religious, civic and private settings for centuries. Workshop practices have included models and transferred designs as well as direct carving in the selected material.
Commissioning
The scale, location, material and finish should be agreed, together with review stages. The agreement should identify who selects the stone and whether transport, foundations, installation and advice on future care are included.
