A stepped watercourse connects stone terraces and reflecting pools in the Aga Khan Garden, Alberta. Source
Description
A designed waterfall directs water over stones or a constructed edge. Stone placement and profile affect the flow, sound and appearance. A naturalistic cascade and an architectural water wall use different forms, while both require coordinated support and water-retaining construction.
History
Cascades belong to the wider history of water in designed landscapes. Contemporary garden projects continue to combine changes of level, stone and moving water, adapting established ideas to local settings.
Commissioning
The intended flow, collection area, circulation, splash zone and maintenance access should be agreed. Main viewpoints and the appearance when water is stopped should be considered. Stonework and water systems should be designed as one installation.
