Description
A rock garden is organised around the placement and relationship of stones, with planting, gravel or water. Scale, texture and the apparent connection of stones to the land influence the composition. Routes and viewpoints determine how it is experienced.
History
Distinctive rocks have long been important in Chinese gardens, where their shapes can suggest mountains and wider landscapes. Other garden traditions use stone differently, and a contemporary design may draw on a specific tradition or develop an original approach.
Commissioning
The intended character should be discussed before stones are selected. Placement, support, drainage and planting should be coordinated. The agreement should explain how the garden will develop and what maintenance is expected.
