Patterned granite walkways through the Aga Khan Garden in Alberta, designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Source
Description
A stone walkway connects entrances, gardens and other destinations. Its width, direction and laying rhythm shape the route. Close paving, irregular flags and separated stepping stones offer different experiences, with planting and edges defining the relationship to the surrounding ground.
History
Paths are a fundamental part of designed gardens. Different traditions use them to organise direct movement or reveal changing views, with stone providing both a walking surface and a repeated visual element.
Commissioning
Expected use, levels, drainage and the surface underfoot should be discussed. The supporting construction needs to suit the site. Thresholds, steps and adjacent ground should be coordinated with the path, with installation responsibilities clearly agreed.
