Description

Landscape stonework brings paths, walls, terraces, boulders and water features into a garden or wider setting. Their placement affects routes, views, planting and changes of level. A landscape architect or designer may establish the overall plan, with wallers, masons and other specialists making particular elements.

History

Stone has long been used to organise cultivated land and gardens. Contemporary projects can adapt established traditions: the Aga Khan Garden in Alberta, for example, draws on Islamic garden design within a Canadian landscape.

Commissioning

The brief should describe how the space will be used and its relationship to surrounding buildings and land. Levels, access, drainage, water and maintenance should be considered with the stone palette. Responsibilities for design and construction should be clear.
