Stone inlay

An ornamental stone tabletop with geometric compartments and coloured stone inlay.

An Italian pietra dura tabletop made in Rome in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, with hardstones, alabaster and marble inlaid within a marble frame. Source

Description

Stone inlay fits shaped pieces into a surrounding surface of stone or another material. It can form patterns, pictures, lettering and heraldry. Natural colour and veining supply details within the composition. Borders, backing and joints help connect the fitted design to the finished object.

History

Fitted-stone ornament flourished in Renaissance Italian furnishings. The Farnese Table is an important example, bringing coloured marbles and other stones into an elaborate tabletop composition.

Commissioning

The design, dimensions, surrounding material and setting should be agreed. Samples can establish the palette and intended joint appearance. The backing and installation should suit the object’s use, whether a small panel, tabletop or architectural surface.
