A stone bridge crosses the Japanese Garden pond at Sonnenberg Gardens in Canandaigua, New York. Source
Description
Stone can form a pond’s edge, adjoining terraces, cascades and stepping or viewing points. Its arrangement is designed with the water-retaining structure, planting and routes around the pond. Wildlife, planted and ornamental-fish ponds can have different requirements.
History
Ponds have formed part of established garden traditions. In Chinese gardens, water and rocks can evoke a larger landscape within a confined space, with views changing as visitors move through the composition.
Commissioning
The brief should establish purpose, depth, edge access and the relation to paths. Responsibilities for the lining, structure, circulation and maintenance should be agreed. The design should account for visible water levels and the appearance when the water is still.
