Description

A garden wall marks an edge, divides spaces or provides shelter and a backdrop for planting. It can be dry-built or mortared, with one or both faces visible. A wall retaining earth also has structural and drainage requirements beyond those of a freestanding boundary.

History

Garden walls share techniques with agricultural and building traditions. Dry stone boundaries remain a defining part of many historic landscapes, with local stone influencing their dimensions, texture and regional character.

Commissioning

The height, thickness, faces, coping, ends and corners should be agreed. Foundations, stone supply and access belong in the scope. Junctions with gates, buildings and terraces should be designed with the wall.
