Building a dry stone wall in South Wales, one form of traditional masonry. Source
Description
Masonry is the shaping, laying and joining of stone units. It ranges from irregular rubble to dressed ashlar blocks set in regular courses. The arrangement, joints and supporting construction determine how the work functions. Masons may cut new work, lay supplied units or repair existing structures.
History
Stone masonry is a longstanding building craft, with regional forms shaped by available materials and working methods. Surviving historic walls preserve evidence in their stone selection, tooling, courses and mortar joints.
Commissioning
The scope should state whether the work is structural, a facing, a landscape feature or a repair. Foundations, drainage and adjoining construction need coordination. For repairs, existing movement, moisture and materials should be assessed before replacement stone or mortar is selected.
