Description

Carving classes teach the relationship between stone, tools and a developing form. Courses can concentrate on sculpture, relief, architectural detail or lettering. Practical content, individual working time and the intended result vary between introductory sessions and sustained training.

History

Stoneworking skills have long been passed through workshop teaching and practice. Contemporary courses extend that learning to beginners and experienced makers, sometimes combining the drawing of forms with their transfer and carving in stone.

Commissioning

The participant should confirm the subject, level, tools and stone provided. Working conditions, access needs and the amount of individual guidance are useful questions. The course description should make clear whether the aim is an introduction, a completed piece or further development of an existing practice.
