Dry-stone walling at Kilnsey Show, Yorkshire: stones are selected and placed as the wall is built. Source

Description

Walling classes teach the selection, placement and connection of stones in a dry stone wall. Depending on the course, practical work may include dismantling, foundations, faces, internal filling and coping. Introductory courses and specialist retaining-wall training have different scopes.

History

The craft has been passed through practical work with experienced wallers. Contemporary training courses provide structured introductions and opportunities to develop skills within that continuing tradition.

Commissioning

The participant should confirm the wall types taught, required experience and individual practice time. Tools, materials, working conditions and access needs should be discussed with the instructor. The course outcome should be clear before booking.
