Description

Relief carving forms figures or patterns that remain attached to a background. It ranges from shallow changes of level to strongly projected, undercut forms. Light and viewing angle make the depth legible. Subjects include portraits, foliage, abstract patterns and heraldry, in independent panels or architectural work.

History

Relief has been used in architecture and sculpture across many periods. Renaissance sculptors developed especially shallow forms: Donatello’s marble reliefs used slight changes of surface to suggest figures and space.

Commissioning

The available stone thickness, viewing distance and light should be established. The proposal should show the projection, surrounding field and border. Support and fixing need consideration where the panel is to be installed in a wall or larger composition.
