Description

Sandstone consists of sand-sized grains bound by natural cement, which may contain silica, calcite or iron compounds. Colours include cream, grey, buff, brown and red. Grain size, cement and bedding influence its appearance and working characteristics. Varieties serve carving, masonry and paving.

History

Sandstone records the deposition and consolidation of sand. Subsequent geological changes affect its cement and structure. As a building and carving material, local sandstone has contributed to regional architectural traditions.

Commissioning

The source, bed, cutting direction and finish should suit the proposed use. Fine detail is best assessed on the actual grain. For repairs, replacement stone needs compatibility with the existing construction as well as an appropriate colour.
