Curving limestone stairs around the Reading Room in the British Museum’s Great Court. Source
Description
Stone steps may be solid units, treads laid on supporting construction or part of a masonry stair. Treads, risers and landings form a connected route. The edges and finish affect appearance, while the dimensions and support determine how the stair is used.
History
Steps have long connected buildings, terraces and gardens across changes of level. Historic stone stairs also record wear and later repair, making their existing construction important when replacement or alteration is proposed.
Commissioning
The starting and finishing levels and available space should be measured. Dimensions, support, drainage, finish and any handrails or access requirements should be coordinated with the responsible designer. Repairs should address the cause of movement or deterioration.
