Description
Masonry repairs can include resetting, rebuilding, local stone replacement and work to joints. Cracks, eroded mortar and surface loss need examination in relation to movement, moisture and the original construction. The cause of deterioration guides the scope of repair.
History
Historic masonry records successive periods of maintenance and alteration. Modern conservation practice gives importance to retaining serviceable material and selecting replacements compatible with the existing stone and mortar.
Commissioning
The proposal should record condition and explain the chosen treatment. Retained and replaced areas, stone supply, mortar and workmanship should be agreed. A sample can establish the intended appearance before wider work proceeds.
