Description
Stone lighting uses stone as a lamp body, base, shade or illuminated element. In translucent materials such as alabaster and decorative onyx, thickness and natural pattern affect transmitted light. Solid stone can instead provide weight and sculptural form around the light source.
History
Contemporary lighting design extends traditional stone carving into objects with electrical components. Studios working with minerals and carved stone explore both the unlit form and the appearance of the material under illumination.
Commissioning
A sample should be reviewed under the proposed light source and in daylight. The brief should cover colour, light distribution, support and access to replaceable parts. Stonework and electrical design should be coordinated within the commission.
