Description

Calcite is calcium carbonate, with a Mohs hardness of 3 and prominent cleavage. It is a major constituent of limestone and marble, and also occurs as crystals or massive material. Clear, white and coloured varieties are used in carved objects. Bands, fractures and translucency affect the appearance of an individual piece.

History

Calcite is formed in several geological settings, including the precipitation of minerals from water. Calcite-rich stone has a long history in vessels and ornament; Egyptian alabaster is a familiar example.

Commissioning

Edges, support and finish should suit the selected piece and its intended use. Calcite is affected by acids, so contact with food, drinks and cleaning products belongs in the initial discussion. Surface care should be agreed with the maker.
