Description

A stone gateway frames an entrance through posts, beams, arches or other forms. It can incorporate carving and inscriptions, and may support gates or doors. Its proportions relate both to the passage through it and the approach from a distance.

History

Entrance carving has a longstanding architectural role. Historic portals demonstrate how sculpture and ornament can give emphasis and meaning to the point of arrival at a building.

Commissioning

The opening, levels, adjoining walls and any moving equipment should be defined. Foundations, structural design, carving and fixings need coordination. Culturally specific ornament and inscriptions should be reviewed against the intended references before fabrication.
