Description
Stone furniture includes tables, seats, stools and benches made wholly or partly from natural stone. Pieces can be carved from a block or assembled with stone, timber, metal and other materials. The construction influences weight, joints, support and appearance.
History
Historic examples include the sixteenth-century Farnese Table, with its fitted-stone top and carved marble piers. Contemporary designers also use stone as the main volume of a piece, including Sten Studio’s assembled marble and lava-stone stools.
Commissioning
The intended activity, dimensions, contact surfaces and edges should be agreed. Stability and access to the final room or garden need attention. The agreement should cover detachable parts, delivery, assembly and placement.
