Welsh slate wall beside the Senedd entrance, beneath its sweeping timber canopy.

The Senedd in Cardiff: rough-faced Welsh slate at the entrance beneath the building’s timber canopy. Source

Description

A stone facade may be load-bearing masonry or a facing supported by another structure. Unit sizes, joints, fixings, movement and weather management determine its construction. Surface finish and stone pattern are developed within that system, including the treatment of openings and adjoining materials.

History

Historic stone buildings demonstrate the use of masonry for both enclosure and architectural expression. Later facing systems separated the visible stone from the principal structure, creating different requirements for support, joints and maintenance.

Commissioning

The scope should identify structural and envelope design, fabrication and installation responsibilities. Stone, finish and joint pattern should be coordinated with those details. Existing facades need assessment of the supports and construction as well as the exposed surface.
