Repointing work at Wesley Church, Fremantle, Western Australia. Source
Description
Repointing renews deteriorated mortar in the exposed joints of masonry. The composition, texture and profile of a joint affect the wall’s appearance and behaviour. Replacement mortar needs to be compatible with the stone and existing construction.
History
Mortar joints are a recurring point of maintenance in historic masonry. Conservation guidance treats their repair as work to be based on the original materials and condition, retaining sound historic mortar where possible.
Commissioning
The areas requiring work should be established through assessment. The proposed removal method, mortar and finish can be agreed through a trial panel. Protection of adjoining stone and a record of the work should form part of the scope.
