Description

A relief panel presents figures, patterns or ornament against a continuing background. It may be an independent artwork, a building element or part of a sequence. The depth of projection and treatment of the surrounding field determine how light and shadow describe it.

History

Relief panels have appeared in architectural and sculptural traditions over many centuries. Renaissance work includes Donatello’s exceptionally shallow marble reliefs, which suggest depth through delicate changes in the surface.

Commissioning

The subject, dimensions, available depth and lighting should be agreed. Borders, joints between panels and the method of support belong in the design. Repeated units should have a clear approach to matching or deliberate variation.
