Description

A stone portrait may be a head, bust, figure or relief. Likeness includes expression, posture and character as well as physical features. The sculptor’s interpretation, material and intended viewing position determine the form and surface of the work.

History

Portraits are part of the long history of figurative sculpture. Workshop methods have included carving from models, while artists have also developed likenesses through direct study of a sitter and work in the material.

Commissioning

The artist should explain whether sittings, photographs or models are required. Pose, scale, material and review stages should be agreed. The support and setting need consideration, particularly for a wall-mounted or public portrait.
