Description

A stone plaque carries an inscription, image or both on a defined panel. It may commemorate a person, record a dedication or identify a place. Usually attached to a wall or support, its proportions and lettering relate to the viewing height and surrounding architecture.

History

Inscribed panels form part of the longstanding use of stone for public and private commemoration. Contemporary letter carvers continue to make individual plaques, adapting the text and design to the intended building or occasion.

Commissioning

The wording, lettering, border and proportions should be approved before fabrication. The maker should see the mounting surface and position. Thickness, fixing points and installation access belong in the agreement alongside the visible design.
