Description

Memorial restoration addresses the condition and legibility of an existing commemorative work. Assessment may cover the stone, lettering, sculpture, fixings and site. Weathering and earlier repairs are considered before decisions about cleaning, recutting or replacement.

History

Memorials accumulate signs of age, maintenance and changes to their setting. The conservation of war memorials and other historic monuments treats those surviving materials and records as part of their significance.

Commissioning

The history and condition should be recorded before treatment is specified. The agreement should explain the aims, extent and evidence for reinstated detail. A record of completed work and a continuing care plan should accompany the result.
