Description
A stone fireplace can include a surround, mantel, hearth and adjoining masonry. These elements frame the opening and contribute to the room’s architecture. The firebox, appliance and flue have their own construction requirements, which must be coordinated with the visible stonework.
History
Carved chimneypieces became important elements of historic interiors. Eighteenth-century designs brought architectural mouldings and sculptural ornament together around the hearth, often involving both an architect and a specialist carver.
Commissioning
The maker should have details of the appliance or fire arrangement and surrounding building. Stone, profiles, joints and finish should be agreed alongside installation. For a historic fireplace, original material and details should be recorded before changes are proposed.
