Description
Conservation planning brings together a work’s history, significance, condition and risks. A plan can set priorities for investigation, maintenance and treatment. It provides a record of the reasons behind decisions and a basis for continuing care.
History
The assessment of significance is established within modern heritage practice. Historic England’s Conservation Principles formalise an approach in which understanding a place and its values informs decisions about change and care.
Commissioning
The brief should identify the stonework covered, available records, intended users and purpose of the plan. The scope should include how investigations and decisions will be documented, and how the recommendations will guide maintenance as well as immediate work.
