A travertine specimen showing its pale carbonate texture. Source
Description
Travertine is limestone with characteristic cavities and layers. Cream, beige, warm brown and reddish varieties occur. Cutting along or across the layers produces different patterns. Cavities may be left open or filled, affecting the visible texture and the care of a finished surface.
History
Travertine forms as carbonate minerals are deposited from mineral-rich water. Its pores and layers record the conditions of that deposition. Although sometimes described commercially as marble, its geological formation is sedimentary.
Commissioning
Cut direction, filling, finish and edge detail should be approved together. A floor, vessel and exterior installation place different demands on the material. The selected stone and any fill should be assessed for the proposed conditions.
