Description

In decorative stonework, onyx commonly describes a banded, often translucent calcite-rich stone. It differs from gemstone onyx, which is chalcedony, a quartz material. Cream, honey, green and pink bands can be prominent in vessels, panels and lighting objects.

History

Calcite onyx and quartz onyx have different geological origins. Their shared name reflects a history of decorative and commercial terminology rather than identical mineral composition. Establishing which material is meant is important when comparing older objects and modern supplies.

Commissioning

For illuminated work, the stone should be reviewed under the proposed lighting and at the intended thickness. Joins, backing and access to the light source need coordination. Calcitic varieties require the surface care appropriate to carbonate stone.
