British Museum Great Court by Foster + Partners. Honed Caliza Capri limestone forms circulation spaces and curving stairs around the historic Reading Room beneath a glazed roof. Source

Description

Limestone is composed mainly of carbonate minerals, commonly calcite. It can contain fossils, shell fragments, rounded grains or fine layers. Varieties range from pale cream and buff to grey and dark stones. Texture and inclusions affect its use for masonry, lettering, mouldings and sculpture.

History

Many limestones record sediments accumulated in ancient bodies of water. The stone became an important regional carving and building material in Europe, with local deposits influencing the character of buildings and sculpture.

Commissioning

A named source or bed gives a clearer specification than the family name alone. The intended detail, finish and exposure should be discussed with the maker. Carbonate stone can be affected by acids, which is relevant to surfaces in contact with food or liquids.
