Description

Lava stone is a broad description for rock formed from cooled lava. It includes compact basaltic material and porous volcanic stones, with colours ranging from grey and black to red or brown. Pores, dense areas and contrasting finishes can contribute to a carved or assembled object.

History

Volcanic stone has been used for tools, sculpture and monuments in regions where it was available. Surviving Mesoamerican carvings illustrate a tradition that included both large public works and smaller objects.

Commissioning

The source and rock identity should be established where possible. The brief should state whether the piece is for display, paving, water, food contact or another use. Those requirements need assessment of the actual material, finish and construction.
