Description

Lapis lazuli is a rock containing lazurite, calcite and pyrite, sometimes with other minerals. Lazurite produces its blue colour; calcite gives pale areas and pyrite forms metallic flecks. It is used in ornaments, vessels, carvings and inlay, with considerable variation between pieces.

History

Lapis was valued in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt and traded over long distances. Afghanistan has been an important source for thousands of years. Its colour has contributed to its use in both carved objects and decorative surfaces.

Commissioning

The agreed palette should allow for the distribution of blue, white and metallic areas. Any colour or surface treatments should be disclosed. The maker should advise on the finish, handling and care appropriate to the chosen pieces.
