Description

Dolomite is a calcium-magnesium carbonate mineral. A rock rich in it is more precisely described as dolostone or dolomitic stone, although dolomite is also used as a trade name. Dolomitic marble has a crystalline texture. Colour, grain and working characteristics depend on the particular rock.

History

Dolomitic sedimentary stones develop through geological processes that can alter earlier carbonate deposits. Metamorphism may then produce dolomitic marble. These different histories help explain the range of stones sold under related names.

Commissioning

The supplier’s stone identification, source and finish should be recorded. For carving, the proposed block needs to suit the intended detail. For a surface, exposure, contact with liquids and care should be discussed with a fabricator familiar with that stone.
