Description

Bocabec refers here to dark stone associated with the Bocabec Gabbro in southwestern New Brunswick. Provincial records describe greenish, medium- to coarse-grained olivine gabbro with grey diorite. The visible mineral texture can be brought out by polishing or a textured finish.

History

Historical ornamental-stone accounts describe this material as black granite, a commercial rather than geological name. Provincial records document former quarrying near Lake Utopia and Second Falls.

Commissioning

An identified sample and provenance record are useful for a new work or repair. The proposed block, dimensions and finish should be confirmed with the supplier. Historical quarry records describe past production and do not establish present availability.
