Lettering on a mid-eighteenth-century Swithland slate headstone in Stoughton, Leicestershire, signed by William Kirk. Source
Description
Lettering is the design and making of letterforms. In stone, it includes incised and raised letters composed for inscriptions, memorials, plaques and artworks. Spacing, line breaks, the shape of the cut and the stone’s surface determine how the text is read in light and shadow.
History
Carved lettering is an established part of architectural and commemorative work. Roman letterforms remain a reference in contemporary teaching, alongside later and original designs developed by individual letter carvers.
Commissioning
The words, their meaning, viewing distance and setting provide the starting point. Final spelling, dates, punctuation and layout should be approved before cutting. Depth, texture and any colour or gilding should be considered as part of the composition.
