Description

An address stone identifies a house, property or entrance through carved names or numbers. It may be built into a wall, fixed to a building or set on an independent block. Letterforms, spacing and the relationship to the entrance contribute to its character and readability.

History

Address stones belong to the wider tradition of identifying buildings through inscriptions. Contemporary letter carvers continue that practice with designs made for a particular property and setting.

Commissioning

The exact wording, position and viewing distance should be established. A final layout should show the lettering, finish and any colour fill. The maker and installer should agree how the stone will be supported and fixed before cutting begins.
