Description

A stone vessel encloses space in a bowl, vase, basin or related form. Its interior, rim, wall thickness and base contribute to the design. It may be made for display, practical use or both, with the material influencing weight, translucency and surface.

History

Carved stone vessels have survived from ancient cultures. Egyptian calcite alabaster objects demonstrate the use of hollowed stone forms, combining a shaped interior with the pattern and light-transmitting qualities of the material.

Commissioning

The intended contents and use should be established. Dimensions, weight, interior finish and any drainage or fittings should be agreed. The selected stone and construction need to be assessed for that purpose, especially where a vessel is to hold water.
