Description

Stone homeware includes bowls, cups, trays, basins and other household objects. Weight, balance, touch and cleaning influence their design. A piece can be decorative, functional or both, with the interior and base as important as the outer form.

History

Carved stone has long been used for small vessels and domestic objects. Ancient Egyptian calcite alabaster vessels are one example of a tradition that joins useful forms with the colour and translucency of the material.

Commissioning

The maker should know whether the piece will contact food, water, soap or other substances. The stone, filling, treatments and interior finish should be agreed for that purpose, with appropriate instructions for care.
