Description
Sculptural objects are individual artworks intended for a shelf, table, plinth or other close setting. They may suggest a vessel or functional form while remaining works for display. Orientation, balance, texture and the relationship to the viewer contribute to their character.
History
Small carved objects have an established place in decorative art. European hardstone workshops developed ornamental pieces alongside elaborate furnishings, while contemporary makers continue to explore stone at an intimate scale.
Commissioning
The artist and client should agree dimensions, finish, orientation and support. Handling and exposure should be discussed. If practical use is intended, such as holding water, that requirement should be stated and assessed explicitly.
