Description
A public monument commemorates a person or event, marks a place or provides a civic focus. It can combine sculpture, inscriptions, paving and landscape. Its scale and form are considered in relation to the people who encounter it and the site it occupies.
History
Monuments belong to a long history of public stone sculpture. Ancient examples demonstrate the use of large carved works to express religious and civic ideas; contemporary commissions continue to connect a work with a shared place and purpose.
Commissioning
The site, commissioning body, consultation, approvals and ownership should be established. The agreement should coordinate artistic design, foundations, installation and inscriptions. Contributors’ credits and responsibility for future care should also be recorded.
