Description
Monumental art can be integrated with a building or public place and combine stone, glass, ceramics, metal and other materials. Conservation considers the artwork, its support and the significance of its setting. The surrounding construction may be central to the work’s survival.
History
Building-integrated mosaics and other monumental works form a distinct part of modern public art. Specialist conservation has developed methods for their care, including the difficult decisions raised when buildings are altered or removed.
Commissioning
The scope should coordinate assessment, structural input and decisions about keeping, protecting or moving the work. Ownership and responsibilities should be established. Records should document treatment and any change of location or support.
