A carved slate inkstone with a recessed grinding surface and a pine-and-bird design.

Inkstone with a pine tree and bird, China, sixteenth century. Slate. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1993.378. Source

Description

An inkstone provides a slightly abrasive surface on which an inkstick is worked with water to prepare ink. A well may collect the liquid. Carved decoration can surround the working area, joining practical use with an ornamental or collected object.

History

Inkstones belong to the writing equipment of East Asian calligraphy and painting. In Japan they form part of the traditional writing box, alongside the brush and other implements, within an established decorative-arts tradition.

Commissioning

The maker should know whether the object is intended for regular use or display. Stone, grinding surface, well, size and carved motifs should be agreed together. The working qualities of the surface matter alongside the decoration.
