Description
Indigo-dyed sculpture combines shaped stone with applied indigo colour. In Kavin Mehta’s practice, hand-carved limestone and calcium-rich marble are repeatedly immersed in natural indigo vats. The treatment colours the stone while allowing its underlying form and texture to remain part of the work.
History
Mehta developed this work through research into uses for indigo beyond textiles. He established his studio near Ahmedabad in 2015 and taught himself to carve stone before combining carving and dyeing.
Commissioning
The intended colour range, finish, display and care should be discussed with the artist. Variation can be an intended part of the surface. The supplied stone and added treatment should both be identified in the commission.
