Description
Commesso in pietre dure creates images and ornament from closely fitted, individually shaped stones. Natural colours and markings can describe petals, feathers, shadows and other details. Selection and fitting are central to the result, with the joints following the design.
History
The practice is closely associated with the Florentine court workshops established under the Medici in 1588. Related fitted-stone decoration spread through European courts and appeared in panels, furnishings and other objects.
Commissioning
The design, dimensions, border and setting should be settled before the detailed palette is assembled. Examples and samples can establish the intended jointing and use of natural pattern. Backing and installation should form part of the agreement.
