The birdbath commemorating Baroness Mount Temple at Babbacombe, dating from around 1900. Its bowl is granite; the monument also uses local grey limestone. Source
Description
A stone birdbath combines a water-holding basin with a base or sculptural support. Its depth, slopes and surface affect access for birds. The form also contributes to the garden composition, whether freestanding or placed near planting.
History
The birdbath brings the carved garden basin into the provision of water for wildlife. Current bird-care guidance emphasises accessible shallow water and regular cleaning, considerations that influence both traditional and contemporary designs.
Commissioning
The basin, filling and emptying arrangements, and cleaning access should be discussed with the maker. The selected stone, joints and any surface treatment need to suit the water-holding use. A stable final position should be agreed.
