Description
Architectural mosaics are made for walls, floors, entrances and other built surfaces. Separate units form the composition, while bedding, backing and installation connect it to the building. Stone selection and the size and direction of the units affect the visible image.
History
Ancient Mediterranean buildings used mosaics as integral floor decoration. Roman examples combined geometric borders with animals, figures and other subjects, establishing a rich relationship between the image and its architectural setting.
Commissioning
The brief should identify scale, palette, exposure and expected foot traffic or contact. Responsibilities for the substrate, making and installation should be agreed. Historic mosaics require assessment before alterations are proposed.
