Description
Utopia Granite occurs around St. George in southwestern New Brunswick. Provincial records describe medium-grained red to pink biotite granite. The name identifies a regional geological unit, whose visible quartz, feldspar and dark mineral grains give the stone its characteristic texture.
History
An ornamental-stone industry developed around St. George from 1872. Provincial records document numerous quarries and finishing operations, with the granite’s red colour and even texture contributing to its use.
Commissioning
The provenance, dimensions and condition of the proposed block should be established. A worked sample can confirm the intended finish. Historical quarrying does not establish current supply; availability and suitability should be confirmed with the supplier and practitioner.
